about

In 1990, murals in Lincoln Cathedral painted by Duncan Grant between 1956 – 9 were finally opened to view; the Dean and chapter had decided shortly after their completion that they were just not suitable for the sensitive dispositions of the public they had been commissioned for, and the chantry housing them was turned into a store-room for the next 30 years. Forty odd years before this doubtless annoying experience, Grant was instrumental in facilitating the art of Roger Fry & Wyndham Lewis; this ultimately became the Vorticist movement. In 1914 the first issue of BLAST! was published, wherein was the Vorticist Manifesto. Here are the first six items:

1: Beyond Action and Reaction we would establish ourselves.
2: We start from opposite statements of a chosen world. Set up violent structure of adolescent clearness between two extremes.
3: We discharge ourselves on both sides.
4: We fight first on one side, then on the other, but always for the SAME cause, which is neither side or both sides and ours.
5: Mercenaries were always the best troops.
6: We are primitive Mercenaries in the Modern World.

Vorticism was essentially destroyed by the First World War.
